GVMH Receives Award for Depression Screening Practices

Clinton, MO – (Nov. 28, 2018) Did you know about 15 percent of adults will experience depression at some point? Depression significantly affects 16.2 million  U.S. adults, says the National Institute of Mental Health.

Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (GVMH) takes steps to help identify depression symptoms in patients. The steps decide if a patient needs referred to extra resources.

Recently, two GVMH clinics were recognized for their use of depression screening tools. Golden Valley Medical – Osceola and Golden Valley Medical – Windsor received the Gold Award from Medicare.

Osceola has a 90 percent screening rate. Windsor has an 89.3 percent rate. The average rate in Missouri is 55 percent. The national average is 42.8 percent.

The screening began in 2016 when GVMH became a Patient Centered Medical Home facility. This means the clinics focus on a patient’s mental, physical and emotional wellbeing under one roof.

All clinics provide the screening as part of the patient visit. Blood pressure and other vitals are checked, then patients are asked the depression screening questions.

This process opens the door for communication. Patients can discuss concerns through this emotional health vital sign.

If you or someone you know is suffering from depression symptoms, please call your provider or a Golden Valley Medical clinic near you.
