February is American Heart Month

Clinton, MO – (Feb 4, 2019) –  What is the leading cause of death among adults in the United States? It might come as a surprise, but one in four deaths in America is a result of heart disease. February is American Heart Month. Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (GVMH) wants to remind you the importance of learning about your risk for heart disease.

Heart disease can happen at any age. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among younger people (ages 35-64) are putting them at risk for heart disease earlier in life. Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease. This includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.

Do you know steps you can take to help your heart?

This is the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease and the steps you need to take now to help your heart. You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

If heart disease is a concern, GVMH offers a variety of cardiology services that can meet your needs. GVMH offers these state-of-the-art services at our outpatient clinic in Clinton five days a week. Cardiology services have been added at Golden Valley Medical – Warsaw twice a month.
