Elpern brings change to GVMH Ambulance Department

Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare welcomes Avi Elpern as the new Ambulance Director. Elpern takes the lead as the service moves to a stand-alone department.

Elpern says the change will enable ambulance services to operate independently from the emergency department. This change will free up staff and allow for faster emergency response times. While the departments will still work together, each will focus on specific roles.

“We hope to offer better care for our community,” says Elpern. “This structure is the industry standard. It will allow us to increase staff and services to meet the needs of our community.”

Other changes include new software and state-of-the-art equipment. An example is a mechanical CPR device. This device can help when fewer people are on the scene of an emergency. Elpern says this can make the difference in life and death for a patient.

Elpern brings 16 years spent in emergency medicine to his role. He started as a tactical medic and firefighter with the Department of Defense and studied paramedicine and crisis and disaster management. While working with the Kansas City Fire Department as a paramedic, he taught paramedic and emergency medical technician courses at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

The move to GVMH is an opportunity for Elpern to put his experience toward helping others in a rural setting to improve the care they receive.
