Event raises funds for local diabetes patients

Lightning and thunder stopped The Amazing Race to Stop Diabetes before it started, but a rainstorm didn’t dampen the giving.

Race sponsors and donors gave more than $9,400 to the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation. The money helps individuals pay for prescriptions, supplies, classes and eye exams.

The June 2 event was presented by Smith’s Restaurant of Clinton. The race replaced the annual diabetes walk held for a number of years.

“We took the best parts of earlier walks and gave the event a fun spin,” said Deanna Hendrich, GVMH Director of Development and Communications. “We moved to a new location and warmer time of year, plus built on the team spirit the walk was known for.”

Hendrich said 2019 will follow the same format with team challenges and awards, vendor booths, breakfast and door prizes.

“We want to make full use of the space that Artesian Park offers, so we’ll be back,” she said.

The 2018 top fundraising team was GVMH’s Food and Nutrition Services Department. The team has a “tips cup” at The Bistro inside GVMH. All the change collected helps diabetes patients. The Hawthorn Bank team was a close second. The bank’s team uses “jeans days” to raise funds for a variety of causes, including the diabetes fund.

Leland Smith presents a check to Deanna Hendrich, GVMH Foundation. Smith’s Restaurant was the presenting sponsor for the 2018 Amazing Race to Stop Diabetes.

The top fundraising team was the Food and Nutrition Services team at GVMH, which raised $1,932.31. The race brought in more than $9,000 in donations. Diabetes patients count on support from the GVMH Foundation, and the foundation counts on the community. Last year’s top fundraising team at the annual diabetes event was the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton.
